Congress did not finish debating the Foreign Operations Appropriations Bill on Wednesday. SOA Watch is concerned that some Representatives who said they would vote to cut funding to the SOA/WHINSEC may be changing their minds. Please call them again!

Phone Calls Needed Today

 

Congress is expected to vote today, Wednesday, June 20, on an amendment to cut funding for the School of the Americas, which was renamed the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation (SOA/ WHINSEC). Please call your representative before the end of the day and urge him to support the amendment to be introduced by Representatives Jim McGovern and John Lewis.  For information and talking points, go to SOA Watch.

There will be evening plenaries, a film festival, information tents and tables, cultural performances, art exhibits, poetry slams, rallies and actions, a soccer tournament, an all night carabet, parties and more.

100 Cosponsors for H.R. 1707 - but None From SC


H.R. 1707, the bill to suspend operations at the SOA/WHINSEC, now has 100 co-sponsors. Still no one from the South Carolina delegation has signed on, despite the fact that Representative Clyburn has supported similar bills in the past. Please contact your member of congress now!

On April 25-27, Charleston Peace members and SOA Watch activists throughout the United States held public fasts to educate the general public and members of Congress on the SOA/WHINSEC issue.
