Congress to Vote on War Funding - Call NOW!
Tuesday, 18 December 2007
Update & Alert on Omnibus funding bill

It looks as if the House will pass the omnibus funding bill tonight -- with money for the war in Afganistan - but not Iraq.  Many of the human needs groups I have heard from feel this is the best deal that they are going to get, so they are resigned to accepting the domestic side of the bill that comes out of the House. As it moves to the Senate, we can expect a vote on an amendment for $70 billion to fund the occupation of Iraq with no conditions.  The Senate may also move to cut important domestice programs.  [Many of the human needs groups will be fighting against the war funds while also fighting to keep domestic spending intact].

OUR TARGET NOW IS THE SENATE.  WE MUST DEFEAT THE IRAQ FUNDING AMENDMENT IN THE SENATE.

Call on Chinese Authorities to Stop the Violence against Migrant Worker Centre
Tuesday, 18 December 2007

On 20 November, Huang Qingnan of the Dagongzhe (DGZ) Migrant Worker Centre in Shenzhen, China was seriously injured after being stabbed by two unidentified men. The assault follows on the heels of two other violent attacks on the DGZ Centre in October and November. The Centre provides a free library, labour law education and free legal consultation to migrant workers in Shenzhen. It is suspected that the Centre is being targeted for its recent efforts to raise awareness about the new Labour Contract Law, which requires better employment conditions for workers and is scheduled to take effect in January.

Take a stand to preserve vital public services
Thursday, 01 November 2007

The U.S. has slashed federal funding for human needs while spending more than $1 trillion on the Iraq war. Now President Bush wants even more money for the war after vetoing funding for children's health care, and threatening to veto a bill that would increase funding
for Head Start, Nutrition for Elders, Home Heating Assistance (LIHEAP), and dozens of other vital programs.

Please use AFSC's toll-free number to call Congress and ask your representatives to save these and other programs .

For more information, check the AFSC website . (The link will open in a new window.)

Help Troy Davis, Unjustly Sentenced to Death
Sunday, 15 July 2007

Troy Davis was sentenced to death for the murder of Police Officer Mark Allen McPhail in Georgia. The case against him consisted entirely of witness testimony which contained inconsistencies even at the time of the trial. Since then, all but two of the state's nine non-police witnesses from the trial have recanted their testimony. Many of these witnesses have stated in sworn affidavits that they were pressured or coerced by police into testifying or signing statements against Troy Davis.

Stop the Iraq Oil Law!
Sunday, 15 July 2007
Iraqi authorities have indulged in the recent months in active promotion and propaganda for the "Iraq Oil Law". They forwarded the proposed law to the parliament for approval. This law grants US and foreign oil companies terms which legalize their confiscation of the greater part of Iraq's oil production for as long as 30 years.
