Rally Against Offshore DrillingMeet this Wednesday, June 26, 6:00 PM at the corner of Calhoun and Meeting streets on the sidewalk next to the 76 gas station with overflow across the street. Background and contact info: ![]() ![]() Congress is increasingly controlled by big donations from corporations, and some of the largest controllers are and have been the big oil companies. Henry Brown recently presented a bill which would lift the ban on offshore drilling for gas and oil. This would make vast profits for the oil companies and do almost nothing to reduce our dependence on foreign oil. Our fishing, our beaches and our billion dollar tourist industry would suffer even without a catastrophic spill. Brown's bill failed 279 to 141. Four days later, after the oil companies had a chance to twist arms, it was reintroduced in different words, with no substantive changes, and it was only narrowly defeated 219 to 200. They wield enormous power. They have made most of their recent windfall profits in Iraq and Afghanistan; The majority of Americans have got up to speed with the rest of the world and now believe that starting the aggression was a mistake and that we should leave that civil war and war of resistance to foreign domination (by us), and yet Congress voted against even a timetable for withdrawal. The big oil companies have donated 190 billion dollars to members of Congress. 75% of it has gone to Republicans. Join us on Wednesday, June 28 at 6:00 p.m. at the corner of Calhoun and Meeting streets on the sidewalks next to the 76 gas station (with overflow across the street) to help call attention to Henry Brown's obsession with offshore drilling.
